An epiphany.
I don’t think anyone can ever be friends after a relationship. You can be on good terms with them but not friends.
Friends hang out, share their emotions, talk about each other’s days, and love each other unconditionally (hopefully). Your ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend can’t be your friend because you’d be stuck in that relationship again.
